You have a ton of outside of the box directors, and to be honest - NONE are overrated. Kubrick directed one of the all time classics (2001 - A Space Oddisey - sp, Kevin Smith directed the ultimate stoner trilogy with Jay, Silent Bob and the rest. Ron Howard came up from Opie on the Andy Griffith Show to American Grafitti sp to Happy Days to being one of the premier directors in American film, Polanski made his mark with Rosemary's Baby, Tarantino did something called Grindhouse - a 2 parter that was so effed up that it was amazing - collaborated with Robert Rodriguez on that one and got some old timers to work it - Kurt Russell, Bruce Willis - even HE had a part in it.
